Situation
Excellent
The situation is well-chosen, and carefully and vividly described. The story of the event is well-told.
Adequate
You describe the situation and the event sufficiently for the reader to understand the issues and problems.
Emerging
The situation is at least sketched out for the reader. The description of the encounter is vague, or seems to be missing parts, or is confusing.
Needs Attention
Parts are missing, or else delivered in such a generic way as to not seem to be about a specific event.
Self
Excellent
You reflect insightfully on your role and performance in the situation, revealing the nature of your participation.
Adequate
You show awareness of your strengths and weaknesses.
Emerging
You are able to show at least some self-awareness of yourself in the situation.
Needs Attention
You deliver no real insight into your behavior or motivations. You do not seem to evaluate your performance.
Theory
Excellent
Document uses ideas from class or the text to deliver insight into the encounter.
Adequate
Document uses ideas from class or the text to describe communication during the encounter.
Emerging
Document is inconsistent in using ideas from the class or text, or somehow misunderstands those ideas.
Needs Attention
Document makes no use of communication theory.
Mechanics
Excellent
No appreciable errors in grammar, spelling, or sentence and paragraph construction. The organization is compelling, and leads the reader clearly along.
Adequate
Any errors do not interfere with communication or damage author's credibility. May have small problems, e.g., with word choice, but the document remains easy to understand. The organization is clear.
Emerging
Document has errors that damage the author's credibility: noticeable violations of grammar, punctuation, and spelling conventions. Poor or even insulting word choices. The organization hinders comprehension, or is confusing.
Needs Attention
Document is hard to understand due to errors in construction and mechanics. The paper is not organized in any decipherable way.
