Expository Essay Guidelines for scoring an expository paragraph
	Excellent Writing includes science vocabulary terms and scientific process 1 pts	Good Some science vocabulary is included and some scientific process included 0.75 pts	Fair One or two science vocabulary terms are included and one or two scientific processes included. 0.5 pts	Poor No evidence of science vocabulary or process. 0.25 pts
Topic Sentence Is prompt restated into a topic sentence?	Excellent The Main Idea is a clear restating of the prompt.	Good Main Idea is present and clearly written.	Fair Main Idea is present but does not restate the prompt.	Poor Main idea is not present or is unclear.
Logical order Does the order of the supporting details make sense?	Excellent The essay is developed in a logical order appropriate to the writer's purpose and reader's needs.	Good Most of the essay is presented in a logical order, and readers have little trouble following the supporting details.	Fair The writer attempts to develop the essay in a logical order, but some of the essay may be presented in an order readers may find confusing.	Poor The supporting details within the essay as a whole are not developed in a logical order.
Conclusion Does the conclusion restate the topic in a new way to tie the details together?	Excellent The conclusions does an excellent job of summing up or restating the topic and tieing the details together.	Good The conclusion sums up the topic, by restating it, but it does not tie the details together.	Fair There is an attempt at a conclusion, but it doesn't restate the topic or tie the details together.	Poor There is no conclusion the essay just ends without summing up or restating the topic. It doesn't tie the the details together.
Grammar and Mechanics Does the paper indicate that the writer has control of the rules of spelling, grammar and mechanics	Excellent The essay contains no errors in usage, and mechanics.	Good The essay contains fewer than 3 errors in mechanics/grammar.	Fair The essay contains 4 to 7 errors in mechanics/grammar	Poor The essay contains more than 7 errors in mechanics/grammar.
