Format	Poor It may be difficult to identify the beginning, middle and/or end of the story. There is no recognizable sequence to events or parts of the story. The illustrations' order may be confusing.	Average The story has a recognizable beginning, middle and end. The sequence make sense, but may be confusing in parts. The illustrations are in an order that make sense.	Well Done The story has a clear beginning that introduces the characters and the situations. Events have a logical order. The ending is clear. Each part of the story has an appropriate illustration and they help to tell the story.	Excellent The story has an engaging beginning that clearly introduces the characters and the problem they face. The story proceeds in a logical sequence that enhances the meaning of the story. The illustrations and the words go together well.
Writing	Poor The students writing is difficult to understand and repeats simple sentences.	Average The students' writing can be understood, but is sometimes repeats simple or similar sentence structures.	Well Done The students' writing is clear and uses a variety of sentences. Words are used to communicate right ideas well.	Excellent The students' writing is extremely clear, uses a wide variety of interesting sentences and experiments with vocabulary and language to get the right ideas.
Content	Poor The story does not shows creativity. There is not a logical development of ideas.	Average The story shows little creativity. There is a lack of logical development of ideas.	Well Done The story shows some creativity. There is a logical development of ideas.	Excellent The story shows creativity. There is a logical development of ideas.
Mechanics	Poor Many words are spelled incorrectly. There are serious problems with punctuation.	Average Most words are spelled correctly. There are problems with punctuation.	Well Done Most words are spelled correctly. There is good use of punctuation.	Excellent There are no errors or misspellings throughout the entire book. Punctuation is used when needed.
