What is a landmass? What is a landmass? Kindergarten student will understand the definition of a landmass and be able to identify and name the 7 continents. What is a landmass? At the Kindergarten level.
	beginning 1 pts	emerging 2 pts	competency 3 pts
briefly define a landmass. Use words such as island, ocean, continents.	beginning Does not seem to grasp the concept of a large area of land on a map or drawing.	emerging Is able to show landmass areas on a map.	competency Student is able to identify landmass areas on a map, identify oceans and islands and use proper vocabulary words to describe the subject.
Stude Construct a landmass. Students will make a rough design of the earth's landmass surfaces on a cardboard or paper.	beginning Is not fully able to understand the land/ocean layout on a map. Drawing/ clay forms do not indicate that the student is completely aware of the concept of the whole.	emerging Student approximately constructs the continents and oceans in a reasonably recognizable design on the paper/ cardboard.	competency Student is able to construct an easily recognizable earth surface with all the continents and major bodies of water.
The 7 continents	beginning Student is unsure of the location of the continents and is unsure in basic map skills when labeling the map. Students may look at large wall map while doing this.	emerging Student can identify and label 3 or more continents on a map sheet while looking at a map.	competency Student is able to identify all 7 continents and label them correctly on a sheet. The students all may look at a large wall map.
