Pitch Accuracy

Level I

Many notes are incorrect - student seems unfamiliar with the scale.
Level II

Shows a good feel for the notes, but there are repeated mistakes in pitch. Intonation has not developed appropriately.
Level III

Mostly correct pitches and chromatic fingerings with a few errors. There may be small intonation problems.
Level IV

Pitches and chromatic fingerings are correct and intonation has a characteristic quality sound in all registers.

Rhythm and Tempo Accuracy

Level I

Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.
Level II

Pulse is fairly steady but there are frequent or repeated small rhythmic errors.
Level III

Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors.
Level IV

Steady pulse with accurate rhythms at all times.

Tone Quality

Level I

Limited projection - tone is poor or range is limited due to the need for a stronger embouchure and/or breath support.
Level II

Fair use of projection and fullness of tone. There may be room for improvement in posture, embouchure & breath support.
Level III

Considerable use of projection and fullness of tone but still somewhat short of a mature sound.
Level IV

Tone is full and well projected. A truly characteristic sound for the instrument.

Level I

Student has prepared less than half of the scale.
Level II

Student has prepared about half of the scale.
Level III

Student performs most of the material accurately. Preparation is decent.
Level IV

Student performs all scales with control and fluidity. Excellent preparation is evident throughout.
