Sumi-e Painting 
Students create a personal painting, choosing from one of the Four Gentlemen/Animal/or Nature, using Sumi-e painting techniques. Students learn how to use a brush to make gestural strokes. Students learn how to dilute a variety of values from black ink.

Final painting contains a wide variety of brush strokes 3+. Brush strokes make the image "come alive" with personality, or express the "essence" of that object.
Good

Final painting contains a few (2 or less) varieties of brush strokes. Brush strokes are used to enhance the subject matter's look and qualities.
Fair

Final painting contains the same style of brush stroke throughout. Brush strokes do not add to the personality of the subject matter.
Needs Improvement

Brush strokes are not intentional and lack expression of any subject matter...i.e. covered entire paper with black ink.
Management of time and materials

Excellent

Student takes proper care of their brush and materials. They make efforts to keep ink from splattering. They stand when painting and excel at following instructions. Student completes both the Brush exercises and the Sumi-e paintings (perhaps doing several?), showing numerous examples (8+) of brush strokes - experimentation.
Good

Student is aware of their brush and makes effort to take care of materials. They make minimal splatters and keep their brush to themselves. Student is mostly attentive and follows instructions.
Brush stroke sampler shows 5+ examples.

Student is careless with brush and materials. They may splatter. Student has trouble standing still. Student is distracted from following instructions. Few brush stroke examples.
Needs Improvement

Work in incomplete - no connection to demonstration, or characteristic of Sumi-e painting. i.e. fills paper with black paint, paints a monster truck. Brush stroke exercise is consistently the same.

Artwork contains a wide tonal range; greater than 4. Artwork has the "empty space" that is characteristic of the Sumi-e painters. Brush strokes are repeated to create rhythm, movement, or texture.

Artwork contains a variety of tones; at least 4. There is some empty space, could be more. Some movement

Artwork contains minimal tonal range; less than 3 tones.
Little or no movement, lines are stiff/rigid. Paper is filled with subject matter with very little empty space.

Craftsmanship

Finished artwork exceeds expectations. Artwork is well crafted. Attention to detail is apparent. Lines are neat and precise, as well a variety of them, expressing different parts of the chosen subject matter.
There is a sense of balance and a relationship is present Paper is free from unintentional drips/splashes/tears/folds/etc. Signature is clear and location is appropriate.

Finished artwork is made to the best of student's ability. Artwork is crafted with attention. Artwork includes detail. Care is taken to make lines that are neat, fluid, and intentional.
Fair

Finished artwork is below the student's ability.Artwork is sloppy and poorly thought out. Little or no attention to Sumi-e characteristics/subject matter. Artwork appears unkept and without care to neatness.

Artwork show no signs of craftsmanship, effort, or care.
