Formal Letter Writing Formal Letter Writing After learning the structures of both formal and friendly letters, students will write their own formal letter to someone using a formal tone and all elements of the formal letter. Letter	Exceeds The student has convincingly wrote a formal letter to someone that is neat (no scratch outs), clear and accurate.	Achieving The student has written a letter to someone that is neat (no more than one scratch out), and accurate.	Emerging The student's letter to someone was written with scratch outs, and is not clear and/or accurate.	Does not Meet The student did not write in letter format.
Topic	Exceeds Student clearly and accurately stated the intention for the formal letter, and did not deviate from the topic.	Achieving Student included mention of the letter's intent, but did not fully convey his/her need for the reader's attention to the matter.	Emerging Student did not clearly state intention of letter, or had more than one intention, and neither were explained in detail.	Does not Meet Student does not have an intent for writing the letter.
Organization	Exceeds The student neatly and correctly included a heading, date, address, salutation, body, closing, and signature in his/her formal letter.	Achieving The student included a heading, date, address, salutation, body, closing and signature, but some elements were not neatly or correctly positioned on the paper.	Emerging The student is missing one to three critical elements of the formal letter.	Does not Meet The student is missing more than 3 critical elements of the formal letter.
Mechanics	Exceeds Student used correct capitalization, punctuation, and sentences.	Achieving Student had no more than 2 errors in capitalization, punctuation and sentences.	Emerging Student had 3-5 errors in capitalization, punctuation and sentences.	Does not Meet Student had more than 5 errors in capitalization, punctuation and sentences.
Spelling	Exceeds Student's spelling was perfect.	Achieving Student made no more than 2 spelling errors.	Emerging Student made 3-5 spelling errors.	Does not Meet Student made more than 5 spelling errors.
