Content

The ideas are easy to follow and organized. There is a beginning, middle, and end to the piece.

Not Yet Meeting

When I read my story aloud it doesn't make sense - my ideas are mixed up.
A teacher helped me each step of the way.
Approaching

When I read my story, it mostly makes sense - there are a few places where it is mixed up.
I have a beginning but not much in the middle and I don't really have anything at the end.
Meeting

When I read my story it makes sense. The ideas are all in the right place.
I have a beginning, a middle, and an ending.
Exceeding

When I read my story to someone, they go - Wow! I have an interesting beginning, lots in the middle, and a good ending.
Topic Sentence

Is there a topic sentence that introduces what the piece is about?

Not Yet Meeting

My first sentence does not tell the reader what they are going to be reading about.
Approaching

I have a topic sentence that mentions a monster.
Meeting

My topic sentence tells the reader that they are going to be reading about My monster.
Exceeding

My topic sentence tells the reader that they are going to be reading about My monster and it is an interesting "hook".
Closing Sentence

Is there a closing sentence that concludes what the writer has said?

Not Yet Meeting

I didn't really end it. I just stopped writing.
Approaching

I got tired of writing so my ending is abrupt and not too interesting.
Meeting

I have an interesting ending and the reader senses that the story is over.
Exceeding

I have an interesting ending that surprised my reader or made my reader go, Wow!
Adjectives/Descriptions

Is the monster described so that the reader can "see' it? Are other descriptions included?

Not Yet Meeting

I didn't use many adjectives so the reader can't really "see" what I am writing about.
Approaching

The adjectives I used helped the reader to "see" my monster but not other things in the story.
Meeting

I didn't just use adjectives to describe my monster, but I used them to describe other things in the story like my room, and things my monster did.
Exceeding

I used lots of adjectives all the way through the story to help my reader "see" everything I was writing about. Some of my adjectives had the reader go, Eeew, or Yikes! or Grosse! or laugh.
Writing Process

Was the process followed to include a plan, a draft, and a published piece?

Not Yet Meeting

With lots of 1:1 help I was able to follow the writing process.
Approaching

I was able to write my draft on my own. I needed lots of help with using capitals, spellings, and ending punctuation for the published piece.
Meeting

I was able to independently write my draft focusing on getting my ideas down rather than making everything correct.
I only needed help with some spellings and some punctuation for the published piece.
Exceeding

For the most part, I was able to do most everything on my own.
I only needed help with some difficult spellings but I took care of capitals and ending punctuation all on my own for the published piece.
