Pencil Grip

How a student grips writing instruments is an important part of writing and drawing stages.

Emerging

Children grasp the writing instrument with their fist.
Developing

Children grasp writing instruments with thumb and forefinger with the forearm turned away from the body, the crayon or pencil is held toward the thumb and the shoulder directs the movement.
Consistent/Developed

Children grasp the writing instrument between the thumb and two fingers, and the movement comes from the wrist or elbow.
Advanced

Children grasp the writing instrument between the thumb and two fingers and the movement comes from the hands or fingers.
Drawing

Drawing is an early form of creative representation and requires fine motor strength in order to be successful.

Emerging

Random Scribbling- Children- Children are imitating what they see and beginning to recognize that they can use writing instruments to "make something" Creations are generally not intentional.
Developing

Controlled Scribbling-
Children have developed more control and usually identify their pictures as something even though it may not look like that to an adult eye.
Consistent/Developed

Children are beginning to experiment with lines, shapes and patterns. Children draw an identifiable person with at least 4-5 body parts. Children draw pictures and give some explanation of their drawings. Drawings are somewhat identifiable.
Advanced

Pictorial Stage- Children begin to draw identifiable objects in addition to people, use a variety of colors, and may create a scene and give detailed explanations about their work.
Writing

Children often go from pre-writing to writing in a short time span. This skill also requires fine motor strength.

Emerging

Random Marks
Children make random marks using a writing instrument.
Developing

Pretend Writing
Children make attempts to copy writing. It usually appears as letter like symbols and squiggles and lines. Children form letters, especially those in his or her name using clay, wires, sticks. Children write one or two letters and perhaps their first name, though not consistently.
Consistent/Developed

Children write various letters in random arrangement using a writing instrument. Children will often cover an entire page with letters. Children write their first name.
Children may begin to identify their writing as puposeful- such as a letter to Grandma, a book, an invitation to a party
Advanced

Children write letters in a patterned arrangement as they become more aware of print and print direction. Children write identifiable letters in vertical or horizontal patterns.
Children write their first and last names as well as words they see in their print environment.(books, labels, posters, etc) Children ask how to spell words and copy them as dictated in a linear form. Children consistently write for a purpose, and identify it as such, a note for my mother, a grocery list ,etc.
