Spelling	excellent Spelling is generally correct.	good Spelling is usually correct on common words, but more difficult words are problematic.	fair Spelling errors are frequent and repeated.	poor Spelling gets in the way of understanding the content.
Punctuation	excellent The punctuation is accurate, even creative, and quides the reader through the text easily.	good Punctuation is somewhat accurate, and shows a good command for readability, but not creativity.	fair Punctuation is random, and only the easiest rules show awareness of correct use.	poor Lack of punctuation, or numerous errors in punctuation affect the readability of the text.
Grammar and usage	excellent Grammar and usage are alway correct and enhance the writing clarity and style.	good Grammar and usage is good, but does not always add to the style of the writing.	fair Problems with grammar and usage are not serious enough to distort the meaning, but may not be correct or accurately applied all the time.	poor Errors in grammar and usage are very noticable, frequent, and affect meaning.
Paragraphing	excellent Paragraphing tends to be sound, and reinforces the organizational structure.	good Paragraphing is good, but lacks sound organization, dealing with topic sentences, body, and a conclusion.	fair Paragraphing is attempted, but misses some or all of the parts (topic, body, conclusion).	poor Paragraphing is missing, irregular, so that sentences have no relationship to one another.
