Using a 4-3-2-1 scale, this rubric assesses a theatre student's ability to view and orally critique a live theatrical performance in the classroom setting.

Voice Behaviors
LEVEL 4
Audience Member is silent during the performance except to communicate laughter in purposefully comedic moments of the scene and to appropriately exhibit appreciation at the close of the scene.
4's understand and practice the subtle differences between performing arts events and sporting events.
LEVEL 3
Audience Member is silent during the performance except to communicate laughter in purposefully comedic moments of the scene and to appropriately exhibit vocal appreciation at the close of the scene. All voice behaviors are positive.
LEVEL 2
Audience Member is silent during the performance 90% of the time except to communicate laughter in comedic moments of the scene and to exhibit vocal appreciation at the close of the scene. Level 2's are sometimes too robust and accidentally draw attention to themselves and away from performers.
LEVEL 1
Audience Member's voice is heard during the scene. The voice may be involved in a conversation with other audience members or may be responding to what they see on stage verbally. Level 1's therefore are audience members who purposefully draw attention to themselves.

Body Behaviors
LEVEL 4
Level 4's exhibit active listening body behaviors of sitting up, leaning in, tracking with the eye the important thing on stage, and adjusting body behaviors to what is happening on stage between the actors. All body behaviors are positive and supportive.
LEVEL 3
Level 3's are actively using their faces, heads and bodies to promote a positive audience setting. They successfully resist the urge to shift body positions and their attentiveness is never in question. They never create a physical or audal distraction to the performance.
LEVEL 2
Although the Level 2 audience member is usually exhibiting high quality behaviors, during the performance Level 2's may be seen glancing away from the performance area, fidgeting or shifting body position, audibly breathing or sighing. They do not cause a major distraction.
LEVEL 1
The Level 1 audience member causes a major distraction during the scene through his or her use of the body. These body behaviors may be intentional or accidental; the key is the impact on the performance setting.

Accepted Customs & Protocols
LEVEL 4
Positive applause is offered for all performers. Standing ovations are used in a careful and discriminating way. Level 4's quiet the audience prior to scenes and lead countdowns into scenes by volunteering to be stage managers. They understand, respect and defend the superstitions of those who work in the theatre.
LEVEL 3
Positive applause is offered for all performers. Countdowns are executed flawlessly. Standing ovations are personal decisions, not conformist behavior. They respect and defend the superstitions of those who work in the theatre.
LEVEL 2
Positive applause is offered for all performers. The Level 2 audience members join in on standing ovations in a "group think" way. Level 2's join in on countdowns into scenes, but may not be with the group when they begin. They would never purposefully cross the superstitions of the theatre.
LEVEL 1
Level 1 audience members sometimes don't bother to applaud when the scene concludes or they give insincere, inappropriate applause or comments. Level 1's know how to proper countdown, but don't demonstrate it. They are disrespectful to the superstitions of the theatre.

Critique Skills
LEVEL 4
Student volunteers insightful and specific comments regarding the actors' work, and frames those comments in constructive language. Level 4's use the proper terminology. Level 4's can always find both praise and polish in the scenes.
LEVEL 3
Student volunteers specific comments regarding the actors' work. speaker. Level 3's provide feedback frequently and may be counted on to share both praise and polish. Level 3's use the proper theatre term in their comments.
LEVEL 2
Student is respectful to the actors with his or her feedback. Level 2's sometimes seem to focus on the scene as "all good" or "all bad" instead of seeing both things to praise and things to polish. Level 2's often do not volunteer, but must be asked for their feedback. Sometimes they miss opportunities to
LEVEL 1
Student does not volunteer feedback about scenes. They prevent others from hearing comments because they are inattentive. If comments are given, they are disrespectful, repetitive or off-base in nature.
