Guided Reading Rubric
Assessment of reading skills which includes fluency, comprehension, etc... These skills will be observed during guided reading groups in class.

Advanced Reader
Student is on the correct page and is actively reading along (eyes move along the lines) or finger is following words being read aloud by others.
Proficient Reader
Student is on the correct page and usually appears to be actively reading, but looks at the reader or the pictures occasionally. Can find place easily when called upon to read.
Progressing Reader
Student is on the correct page and seems to read along occasionally. May have a little trouble finding place when called upon to read.
At-Risk Reader
Student is on the wrong page OR is clearly reading ahead or behind the person who is reading aloud.
Fluency/Smoothness
Advanced Reader
Reads the selection automatically and effortlessly with appropriate pauses for ALL punctuation.
Proficient Reader
Reads parts of the selection automatically and some parts are read word by word and sound choppy. Gives appropriate pauses for MOST punctuation.
Progressing Reader
Reads the selection word by word and has some extended pauses or hesitations. Sometimes pauses for punctuation.
At-Risk Reader
Reads the selection word by word very slowly and struggles with decoding words. May pause for punctuation.
Expression
Advanced Reader
Reads the selection expressively, with appropriate phrasing and intonation.
Example: whispers, shouts, sounds worried, shows excitement with exclamation marks, etc.
Proficient Reader
Reads the selection with SOME reasonable expression, appropriate phrasing, and intonation.
Progressing Reader
Reads the selection with few signs of emotion or expression. May attempt to show emotion at times.
At-Risk Reader
Reads the selection word by word in a monotone voice.
Pacing
Advanced Reader
Reads at a conversational pace throughout the reading.
Proficient Reader
Reads fast and slow throughout reading.
Progressing Reader
Reads moderately slowly.
At-Risk Reader
Reads slowly and laboriously.
Retell
Advanced Reader
Student is able to retell 3 or more important details from the selection in correct sequence.
Proficient Reader
Student is able to retell 3 or more important details from the selection out sequence.
Progressing Reader
Student recalls some detail from the selection in random order.
At-Risk Reader
Student does not recall any details from the selection.
Oral Comprehension Questions
Advanced Reader
Student is able to answer questions completely and correctly with detail.
Proficient Reader
Student is able to answer the questions correctly, but is vague about recalling details.
Progressing Reader
Student is able to recall details from the story, but does not correctly answer the questions.
At-Risk Reader
Student does not answer questions correctly, and struggles to recall detail.
