Descriptive Essay first draft due 9/29; final draft 10/11.
Write a 5 paragraph descriptive essay about a real place that is part of a special memory. Use the writing techniques we have studied in class, including vivid verbs, figurative language, and sensory details. In the first paragraph, start with a descriptive hook, give a focus (setting, protagonist, purpose) and decide how best to organize your description, using transitions to guide your reader through the next 4 paragraphs. Use a first-person point-of-view and add imagination and emotion. Handwrite or type your first draft, and import your final draft into Moodle. Be sure to edit for spelling, grammar, mechanics and usage. Self-grade your writing on this rubric and hand in with your first draft. Hand in rubric and first draft on the day final draft is due.

Good

The description has 5 paragraphs including a hook, focus and a clear organization, such as spatial, chronological, or order of importance. Transitions usually help readers follow the organization.
Fair

The description lacks either a hook or clear focus, has an organization, but either it needs improvement or it should be changed to a different organization. Some transitions are used, but more are needed.
Poor

The writing lacks a hook and focus, and does not have a noticeable organization. Transitions may be lacking, and the relationship between details may be hard to understand.
Elements of Description

Excellent

Vivid sensory imagery and figurative language help readers visualize the setting. All the details relate to the central focus and together create an emotional response. The writer creates a unique description that helps readers share the experience.
Good

Sensory imagery and figurative language help readers visualize the setting. Most details relate to the central focus. The writer creates a realistic description that readers can follow.
Fair

Some sensory imagery and figurative language are used, but more are needed. Extraneous details should be eliminated. The writer creates a description that tells about the experience rather than helps readers share it.
