Independent Reading Rubric
	Below Proficiency 1 pts	Approaching Proficiency 2 pts	Proficient 3 pts	Above Proficient 4 pts
Book selection	Below Proficiency Scholar was not able to self-select a book. Teacher/librarian needed to select a book for the student.	Approaching Proficiency Scholar self-selects a book that he/she has read before.	Proficient Scholar self-selects a book which he/she has not read before. Book is below reading level or significantly above reading level.	Above Proficient Scholar self-selects a book which he/she has not read before. Book is at his/her reading level.
Stays on task	Below Proficiency Scholar wastes a lot of reading time.	Approaching Proficiency Scholar reads some of the time. 50%	Proficient Scholar reads almost all of the period. 80%	Above Proficient Scholar reads the entire period.
Interest in the book	Below Proficiency Scholar pretends to read the story. Mostly looks around, moves around, or fiddles with things.	Approaching Proficiency Scholar seems to be reading the story, but doesn't seem very interested. Takes some short breaks.	Proficient Scholar seems to be enjoying the story but takes some short breaks.	Above Proficient Scholar is completely interested in the book.
Understands the story	Below Proficiency Scholar has trouble telling the story elements. Student is not able to retell the story.	Approaching Proficiency Scholar knows or names the important characters or other story elements, but is not able to retell the story.	Proficient Scholar is aware of the story elements and can retell some parts of the story.	Above Proficient Scholar can explain the story elements (setting, charachters, and important events) and can retell the story, in detail, in own words.
Uses comprehension strategies	Below Proficiency Scholar inconsistently or rarely uses comprehension strategies to gain meaning from text. The student struggles to gain meaning from text.	Approaching Proficiency Scholar sometimes uses at least 2 different comprehension strategies to gain meaning from text, or has difficulty applying strategies without assistance.	Proficient Scholar consistently uses at least 3-5 different comprehension strategies to gain meaning from text.	Above Proficient Scholar consistently uses several different comprehension strategies to gain meaning from text. The scholar can apply strategies to new or challenging texts.
