Organization
Exceeds Standard
Thesis is clear and well developed. Writing is easy to follow. Clearly defined introduction, body, and conclusion. Each main idea is paragraphed. Good use of effective transitions.
Meets Standard
Thesis is clear but has limited development. Overall, a good paper. Some weaknesses evident. One component of writing is clearly missing. Transitions are needed.
Approaching Standard
Thesis is underdeveloped or missing. Paper is difficult to follow in places. Very weak introduction and/or conclusion. Several components of writing are out of place or missing.
Below Standard
Contains no thesis or a thesis that does not address the topic. Paragraph breaks do not separate ideas clearly or there are no paragraphs. Little if any conclusion.
Idea Development
Exceeds Standard
Convincing paper. Plenty of supporting details. Contains outside information. May contain minor errors that do not detract from the overall quality of the paper.
Meets Standard
Support of the main idea is clear and accurate but is considered general. May contain repetition of details. Contains errors in content. Outside information is minimal, missing or <BR>
irrelevant.
Approaching Standard
The main idea is present but weak or inaccurate supporting detail fails to clarify the answer or main idea. Contains major errors. Shows little understanding of the question.
Below Standard
Paper lacks an answer to the question or is inaccurate. Supporting details are inaccurate or irrelevant. Contains numerous errors. Exhibits inadequate understanding of the question.
Voice and Word Choice
Exceeds Standard
The writing has personality. Essay is descriptive. Tone fits topic and audience. Language errors do not interfere with comprehension of the paper.
Meets Standard
Writing lacks a personal imprint but is appropriate for topic and audience. Language errors are noticeable. Word choice seems forced.
Approaching Standard
Writing lacks original phrasing. Word choice is noticeably inaccurate. Use of slang terms and abbreviations.
Below Standard
Written in a way that it inhibits understanding of the answer. Incorrect usage of words interferes with communication.
Sentence Fluency
Exceeds Standard
Punctuation is generally correct and a variety of sentence structures make the paper easy to read.
Meets Standard
Contains few errors in punctuation that do not interfere with communication of ideas. Sentence structure is generally correct.
Approaching Standard
Many errors in punctuation cause some difficulty for the reader. Sentence structure is incomplete to the point that the reader must "fix" the writing to understand the main idea.
Below Standard
The main idea is difficult to understand because of punctuation errors.
