Fluency

Excellent Reader

Fluently reads selection with 1-3 mistakes. Reads full stops, exclamation marks, commas, etc. appropriately in the reading.
Good Reader

Reads selection fluently with 4-6 mistakes.Reads full stops, exclamation marks, commas, etc. appropriately in the reading.
At-Risk Reader

Rarely reads selection fluently. May stop at punctuation marks.
Extremely At-Risk

Reads selection at one pace. Struggles with word pronunciation and pace of the reading.
Expression

Excellent Reader

Reads the selection with expression. (ex. whispers, shouts, sounds worried, shows excitement with exclamation marks, etc.)
Good Reader

Reads selection with some expression. Will usually follow authors writing prompts- exclamation marks, quotation marks, etc.
At-Risk Reader

Reads selection with few signs of emotion or expression. May attempt to show emotion 1-2 times.
Extremely At-Risk

Never uses emotion or expression while reading.
Word Recognition

Excellent Reader

Recognizes almost all words. May struggle with 1-3 words, but tries to sound this out.
Reads in large chunks, six or more words at a time.
Good Reader

Recognizes most words. May struggle with 4-6 words.
Reads in smaller chunks, four to five words at a time.
At-Risk Reader

Recognizes some words. May struggle with 7-9 words while reading. May attempt to figure out word(s) using context/phonetic clues.
Reads in small chunks, three or less words at a time
Extremely At-Risk

Strugles with most of the words. Rarely attempts to pronounce the word and may skip over the word or replace with a word he/she knows.
Reads one word at a time.
Comprehension

Excellent Reader

Answers questions asked correctly. Can recall detail from the story.
Good Reader

Answers the question correctly but is vague recalling details
At-Risk Reader

Can recall details from the story but does not correctly answer questions.
Extremely At-Risk

Does not answer questions correctly. Struggles to recall detail.
Pacing

Excellent Reader

Reads story at a relaxed pace. Takes his/her time when reading.
Good Reader

Reads at a normal pace. Pacing may change at times (rush/slow down) when struggling with a word.
At-Risk Reader

Rushes through or slowly reads through most of the story, but will read at a relaxed pace when comfortable.
Extremely At-Risk

Reads very fast or very slow. Does not take his/her time or rushes through the story.
