Pen/Ink Self-Portrait 
Students will create a pen/ink self-portrait composed solely of a minimum of six descriptive words. Their self-portrait should contain multiple values and gradation through the use of variation in line.

The portrait does not meet the 12"x24" size requirements. The piece contains less than three descriptive words and is not composed using only text.

The portrait fills most of the 12"x24" picture plane and contains between three and five descriptive words.
Proficient

The portrait fills the entire 12"x24" picture plane and contains six descriptive words.
Advanced

The portrait is 12"x24" and shows effort to extend beyond the picture plane. The portrait contains more than six descriptive words.
Line

Did the student use only line and is there evidence that the use of line varies within the work?

The portrait contains elements other than line. The student did not explore ways to manipulate the length, width, and direction of line.

The portrait is composed only of lines but there is no variation in the length, width, and direction of the lines.

The portrait is composed only of lines which vary in length, width, and direction.

The portrait does not use line as a means to create value and gradation. The student used traditional shading techniques rather than layering and repeating text or there is no evidence of value within the portrait.

The portrait contains some value and gradation along with an attempt to create stark highlights and shadows. The student attempted to layer and repeat text but was unable to create much contrast.
Proficient

The portrait contains values and gradation due to the layering and repetition of text. The student attempted to create the appearance of a light source and has some successful areas of highlights and shadows that reflect this.
Advanced

The portrait contains many values with spaces of heavily layered text contrasted by spaces of sparsely distributed text. The portrait displays an evident light source due to value and gradation within the work. The student created appropriate highlights and shadows within the work.
Review and Reflection

Can the student discuss the concepts presented in this lesson? Can they make connections between these concepts and their own self-portrait?

The student did not pay attention during class discussion. The student makes no effort to discuss the concepts of self-portraits, artist examples, value, gradation or line.
Basic

The student can describe the basic concept of self-portraits but cannot make connections between contemporary and traditional examples. They can discuss value and line as elements of art and can point out examples within their own piece.
Proficient

The student is able to describe the concept of a self-portrait along with traditional and contemporary artist examples. The student can discuss their use of text and how the text affects the value within their portrait.
Advanced

The student is able to compare/contrast various modes of creating self-portraits and can name traditional and contemporary artists who do so. The student can discuss the effect that text has on their finished product and its relation to the idea of the self in this project.
