Musical Instrument Project Rubric 
Students will construct & present a musical instrument made from recycled materials. Instrument must work. Students must produce at least 3 pitches and demonstrate a change in volume. Student must provide a well written paragraph describing the instrument and how sound is produced. Students will work on their projects on March 24-29. The final project will be due on March 30. This is an in class project. Students presentations will be from 1-2 minutes long.

The instrument is well-constructed and nicely decorated. It is sturdy, neat, and will stand up to repeated playing over a period of time. Instrument is very well decorated; no glue, loose strings, or taped spots are evident.
Meets Standard

The instrument reflects some effort on construction and decoration. It is reasonably sturdy and neat and will stand up to being played more than once. Instrument is nicely decorated, but some glue, loose stings, or taped spots are showing through.
Approaches Standard

The instrument reflects some alteration to an existing form to "make" the instrument, may be fragile, and may not stand up to being played more than once. There may be an absence of decoration. Decorations do not cover tape, glue or loose strings.
Below Standard

The instrument reflects an existing form with little or no alteration. Pieces may be missing or falling off. Seems "slapped together" in a hurry. There may be a total lack of decoration. Tape, glue and loose strings are easily seen.

Student can produce good-quality sounds on the instrument and explain how the sound is produced. Student can demonstrate 3 clear pitches and control volume.
Meets Standard

Student is able to produce a good-quality sound on the instrument with no explanation given. Student can demonstrate 3 pitches, though they may not be easily distinguished, and control volume.
Approaches Standard

Student is able to produce a basic sound on the instrument. No explanation given. Pitches may not be distinguishable or there are less than three and volume may/may not be controlled.
Below Standard

Student is unable to produce a sound on the instrument. Student cannot produce the required three pitches. Volume cannot be controlled.

Exceeds Standard

Student presented instrument and played without help from the teacher. Student was able to describe to the class how the instrument produced sound. Student spoke clearly and was loud enough for all to hear.
Meets Standard

Student presented instrument and played with little help from the teacher. Student was able to describe to the class how the instrument produced sound. Student spoke somewhat clearly. Student may or may not have been loud enough to hear throughout presentation.
Approaches Standard

Student presented instrument and played with some help from the teacher. Student was able to describe to the class how the instrument produced sound, but needed some assistance. Student had few difficulties speaking clearly and/or was not always loud enough to hear.
Below Standard

Student refused to present instrument and/or play for the teacher. Student was not able to describe to the class how the instrument produced sound and needed some assistance. Student had difficulties speaking clearly and/or was not loud enough to hear.
