Mechanics/grammar	Excellent (90%-100%) - Journal entry is written neatly and legibly with no spelling errors - There are no distracting mechanical/punctuation errors -There are no distracting grammatical errors -Obvious evidence of editing	Good (80%-89%) 4 of the items in the Excellent category are true.	Average (70%-79%) 3 of the items in the Excellent category are true.	Lacking proficiency (60%-65% 2 of the items in the Excellent category are true.	Below Minimum Standard (40%-59%) 1 of the items in the Excellent category is true.
Content Critical thinking, evidence, and depth	Excellent (90%-100%) - Responses show the student has put a great deal of thought into what he/she writes - The ideas are complex and show thinking that is unique and insightful - Understands the prompt/passage thoroughly	Good (80%-89%) - Entries are good and show the writer is thinking deeply about the topic and attempting to reach an insightful response the prompt with evidence to back up claims	Average (70%-79%) - Student has a complete entry, but may not offer complete ideas, depth of thought or evidence concerning the topic	Lacking proficiency (60%-65% - Entry feels rushed and lacks much depth of thought - Student needs to put more effort into developing his/her ideas with critical thought and evidence	Below Minimum Standard (40%-59%) - Entry is simplistic and is a surface-level interpretation of the topic -Off prompt/no evidence or specifics offered
Coherence/organization	Excellent (90%-100%) - Length and development clearly answer the prompt/reflect on the material without repetition - Clear and easily understood by reader -Smooth transitions - Diction and syntax appropriate for grade level - Excellent sentence variety	Good (80%-89%) 4 of the items in the Excellent category are true.
