About Me

Hello, my name is Stephanie Melancon. I am a graduate of California State University, Long Beach. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and psychology after the Fall of 2010. Currently, I am a proofreader for a government recruitment advertising agency in the D.C. area. I aspire to work in the publishing or advertising industry as a photojournalist or copywriter.

In the past, I was the senior proofreader for a political direct mail company during the 2012 election cycle. I was also a temporary employee for several staffing companies, where I was assigned positions, such as receptionist and administrative assistant. My biggest assignment was working in a full-time position as a receptionist for a biotechnology company, named "Irvine Scientific." I also worked part-time as a proofreader for an education company promoting U.S. community colleges globally. I was also a writer intern for Reazon Systems, Inc., the makers of RCampus. I wrote a press release, blogs on advice and my experience using one of the company's features, the "About" page on the RCampus website, and marketing work on social media sites. I also interned as the assistant to the editor at a food magazine, called "Great-Taste Magazine," where two articles of mine were published in two issues of the magazine. I also edited the magazine, wrote recipes for the website and social networked for the publisher. I have written several multimedia-enriched blogs: One was about my trip to South Africa where I studied abroad, another was about my Disney beat that I followed, another was about budget travel news, and the most popular was a project on the perspectives of the 2010 FIFA World Cup from around Southern California. I wrote a concert review and band interview as a freelancer for a music website, as well. I also worked in a restaurant as a hostess and take-away server, where I provided excellent customer service and had the opportunity to train new hosts and hostesses how to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. Lastly, my first job was as a lifeguard and swim instructor for the City of Irvine. I taught children and adults basic swimming and used my effective teaching methods to move them up to the next swimming level.

Throughout my time at Orange Coast College and CSULB, I made the president's list, honor's list and dean's list for the majority of the semesters that I was an enrolled full-time student. I have also been a member of various honor societies at both colleges, demonstrating that I was one of the few top students, in terms of academic ability, on campus. These memberships include Golden Key International Honor Society and Kappa Tau Alpha: Journalism and Mass Communication Honor Society. Furthermore, I graduated with a Cum Laude degree honor.

I am from Cape Town, South Africa, but currently live in Northern Virginia. I enjoy traveling to different countries and experiencing their diverse cultures. Traveling is by far, my biggest passion and I believe it has made me the person I am today: educated and open-minded. I hope to put my knowledge of the world into writing and photographs to inspire others to get out and explore. Additional interests include new media, photography, music, animals, exercising and scuba diving.

I consider myself to be a very hardworking, determined as well as organized and detail-oriented individual. I have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well. I am a team player, computer savvy and flexible. I also possess various general office skills, such as data entry. I am motivated to further my knowledge and abilities any chance I get. I strive to be the best I can be and believe I could be an asset to any company.
