Description of Sociology 101:

Sociology 101 is a very interesting but challenging course about the society we live in and how it affects our lives.  Sociology is basically a way of thinking that can be applied to nearly every aspect of your life.  This way of thinking is called the sociological perspective, and the entire course is centered around thinking of things from a sociological perspective.  The course consists of reading assignments, writing five essays from a sociological perspective, and five exams throughout the course.  Sociology 101 will totally change the way you think of people and the society you live in.

One of the essays I wrote in Soc 101 describes how each of the three main sociological theories (structural-functional, social-conflict, and symbolic-interaction) look at marriage.

This was the first essay I wrote in college that wasn't for English.  It prepared me for some of the other assignments I've had to do since then.  It was somewhat difficult for me because in the past the papers I've written didn't include much thought.  I would basically write whatever came to mind or what I read about the subject.  This essay in sociology was the first one I really had to think about the topic and figure out what the answer to the essay question was and then try to explain why that was the answer.  I was given three sentences and had to figure out which one went with which theory.  It was very difficult and I spent quite a bit of time on it because I hadn't ever really had to do that before.  I'm very proud of this essay because looking back I was very unprepared, and yet I got the highest grade possible on it.  I learned quickly that college was not going to be easy, but that if I gave it my all I could be successful.
