Description of English 101:

English 101 is basically an english composition course at TCTC.  The main purpose of the course is to teach the students how to write a professional looking paper and how to do research and properly cite the sources they use.  The assignments include writing one cause and effect essay, one compare/contrast essay, one argument essay with research, one research paper which is an expanded version of the argument essay, creating and designing an ePortfolio, writing journals about reading assignments, and some random others.  It is a challenging course and takes quite a bit of time and effort to make a good grade, but a skill is learned that will be helpful in nearly every job which makes it worth the effort.

                                                 Picture that describes me

Objective Description:

The picture is of a silhouette of a person in the foreground, and in the background is the ocean stretching as far as the eye can see with a beautiful sunset reflecting over the water.  The sky has a soft orange glow as the sun goes down.  There are a few scattered clouds high in the sky to offset the rest of the beautiful clear sky.  The water is still other than the waves that slowly creep their way across the sand toward the person like a lion stalks his prey.  The reflection of the sun dances off the water, and the waves make it look alive.  The water is on fire with color.  A man or woman sits cross-legged on the beach with a guitar in hand staring off into the sunset.  He doesn't have a care in the world and nothing could distract him from this amazing scene.

Subjective Description:

I think this picture represents me in that it shows two of the things I like best in life.  For me playing guitar relaxes me no matter what I'm going through or how stressful the day has been.  The beautiful sunset reminds me that I am nothing, and that the Creator of the world is still in control and has power far beyond anything I can imagine.  The reflection of the sunset off the water is just beauty at it's best, and It's hard to think negatively when looking at something that beautiful which is one of my biggest problems.  I think the main reason this picture represents me is because I tend to get stressed out when I have alot of things to do, and I just need some time to relax and gain control of my life again.  This picture represents that peaceful time when nothing else matters, and you are living your life to the fullest.  The one thing I believe is missing is the friends that surround me, but sometimes it good to get away from even my best friends and just spend some time alone.

This essay assignment was somewhat intimidating for me.  My assignment was to write an argument essay on something specific about the environment.  I don't think I've ever wrote an essay on something I knew this little about before hand.  I've never really cared too much about the environment, so I expected it to be difficult for me to write an argument essay about it.  It ended up going better than I thought it would, and I think the most important thing I learned how to do was use library databases to do research.  Doing research trying to find a topic actually opened my eyes to the fact that there are some real problems with our environment, and there are also some good ideas to help fix the problems.  Another thing I learned from writing this essay was how to cite sources.  I've had to do research and cite sources before, but I didn't know all the rules about it.  Writing this paper taught me quite-a-bit about how to do research and properly give credit to the source of the information I used.
