Brief Essay #1, The Initial Impressions Essay

Linda Cathcart – Foundations of Library and Information

Libraries are one of community’s greatest assets. They store an ongoing documentation of the history of our civilization. The shelves are stocked with all of the knowledge and history of the world. They are available as free centers of learning. A library offers a community meeting place, children’s presentations, art exhibits, story-tellers and of course, information.

An innovative librarian teaches literacy skills and motivates learning, through a variety of methods. The librarian of today needs to be a “people person” who is approachable and consumer friendly. They must be able to keep pace with the ever changing world of technology. Proficiency in internet access and training is a must. No longer does a librarian just sit behind a desk and just check out books. The library needs to be a welcoming place with a buzz of activity. There should be a current and balanced selection of books, audio, and video. The librarian is responsible for teaching students how to navigate the Dewey decimal system.   Students should be able to obtain indexes and electronic resources. Help and guidance is provided by the media-specialist in locating research items.

In a school setting or children’s department, the librarian needs to be able to motivate and spark student’s interest in reading. This will strengthen their literacy skills thus raising test scores. For many children, books are the avenues to adventure and foreign lands. Raising teacher awareness of the wealth of information is so important. The librarian must be willing to collaborate with teachers and offer assistance to supplement their lessons. Teachers would be grateful for any help with differentiated learning.

The community library is often available for citizens meetings, public affairs, and entertainment at no charge. A strong library has an active children’s section with books, videos, and learning centers. Information is available to the public regarding public hearings, voter registration, and school news.

The biggest mistake a librarian could make is to alienate the patrons. The librarian and materials must be easily accessible to the smallest child or a new U.S. citizen. There should be a wide array of offerings in print, video and audio. In order to guide people in their research, the librarian should be familiar with many methods and techniques. The electronic world is advancing rapidly and media specialists are expected to stay informed. According to research, school reading scores are decreasing and parents are not necessarily college or even high school graduates. Thereby, it is a responsibility of the media specialist to create a user-friendly library.

One of the greatest ethical dilemmas facing libraries today is the same as it was years ago, censorship. We have a constitutional right to freedom of speech. Who among us is qualified to judge what appropriate material for the patrons at a library is? All students should be exposed to works with different points of view. In order for society to grow and change, exposure to a multitude of experiences is needed. There will always be controversy among people of differing opinions; however it is inappropriate to use that as a basis for library selection.

One of the main reasons that I would like to be a librarian is because local school libraries have inspired me and I want to become involved. Their atmosphere is pleasant and welcoming. Books are displayed by interest or season and bulletin boards show exciting possibilities. Children have been taught the location of authors and their specific reading level. Their excitement is evident daily as they choose new books. In the morning, students are comfortably seated on pillows or a bench enjoying their books before the school day begins. Again in the afternoon, time is allotted for silent reading before dismissal. During the years I’ve taught in schools, I have traveled to as many as six schools per week. I now have the desire to be a member of one school community.

Since my favorite pastime is reading, I hope to inspire students and share my interest in books. In addition, I would like to interact with the classroom teachers and assist them with their needs.
