Reflections

I was lucky enough to work in a special school for children with disabilities for my first teaching round. This classroom experience has shaped me and has given me the opportunity to do something I would have never thought I would do. Being so lucky as to experience such a great event, I discovered a new interest I never knew I had. I am now very interested in working and being qualified to work with students with special needs. This opportunity would have never crossed my mind unless it was meant for me to experience. I have really enjoyed my placement and am returning back to the school to learn more from the great staff and to continue to challenge myself. Continuing to learn from the wonderful teachers and specialist will surely make me a better teacher.

I was always unsure of my ability in teaching children with special needs, until this placement. I am as aware as I could be of what is needed and what to expect with students who have disabilities if they are integrated in my mainstream class. When I return back to Canada I am going to enrol myself in a special needs qualification program. I feel that as a teacher you should know as much as you can about any situation or any special circumstances that may arise in your classroom. I feel that many children with disabilities, who are integrated in a mainstream class, are not given the appropriate assistance they need and are not given the opportunity to be as a part of the class as other students. I also find that teachers who are not specialized in disabilities lose patience when involving children with disabilities in a class room environment. I feel that if I am aware of how to behave and teach special children I will be able to provide them with a more rewarding educational experience.
