Professional Learning

Ongoing professional learning and growth is a key element to promoting the success of students.  By remaining informed about current research in the field of education and by participating in professional development, teachers are able to provide their students with the best circumstances for learning.  I have included links to useful resources and professional development for teachers.

Professional Bibliography

This is a list of resources that I have come across and found to valuable throughout my professional development.

A Guide to Effective Instruction in Reading: Kindergarten to Grade 3

This is an excellent resource that applies to classroom teaching in Ontario and deals directly with curriculum expectations.  There is an entire section devoted to Shared Reading, but this resource should be used to guide and create a well rounded (or balanced) reading program.

School Improvement Planning, A Handbook For Principals, Teachers, and School Councils

This handbook contains all of the information needed to create and implement a school improvement plan including a template, and examples.

Reading Assessment Techniques

This website includes an excellent graphic organizer that depicts the elements that lead to reading comprehension (or reading with meaning).  The graphic organizer can be downloaded as an interactive model that includes methods of assessment for each element of reading comprehension.  Detailed, but easy to understand explanations can be found here for everything from decoding to phonemic awareness, and could be useful when trying to open a dialog with parents about reading.  The site also includes short papers that deal with a variety of topics, including balanced literacy, phonics, sight words, and many more.  Links to numerous other reading resources can be found on the site.
