  Linux

  Chapter 5
Use a search engine to find as much as you can about the Linux Operating System. Use a word processor to create a report describing the following topics, using at least one paragraph per topic:

  1. The origin and history of Linux.
  2. What are Linux Distributions? Name and describe two Linux distributions.
  3. Describe 2 ways to get Linux distributions. How are they installed?
  4. Describe 2 popular user applications/suites available in Linux.
  5. Describe one advantage and one disadvantage of Linux compared to Microsoft Windows.
The Linux Operating Systems was originated in Finland by a college student that created it mainly as a hobby in the early 90’s. He started with a much slower version and progressed it within a year’s time. It originated it’s name as Linus Torvalds. Linux is basically a server that keeps everything running within what’s available to companies such as Internet Explorer. From that point in order to have the viewer or the consumer view a web page or a website, a server must be running this site. When servers go out or are inoperable, the whole site to view go down as well which make it non accessable to anyone trying to view the content. Large companies such as IBM, Hewlett Packard rely on Linux to keep their systems operating correctly and efficiently. Many browsers such as Mozilla rely on Linux Operating Systems as well.
Students and other business’ started to create business’ off of this one idea to create bundle packages of software etc. This is where the concept of distribution came into place. These are offered through software packages that can be downloaded by floppy or CD. This operating system can also be downloaded directly from online companies that will charge a fee for this service. One of the distributions are L13Plus. They use an Intel Compatible platform. It doesn’t say much regarding their services. They say in their heading “the information does not matter, it provides great service great stability etc.” RedHat is another company that offers this service. This is one of the larger companies that provide this service. I seemed to find their name more than any other company because it appears they invest more into advertising to the everyday people. They sell their services on companies such as Amazon.com and provide the same stability and service as any other company available.
One of the ways to get Linux distributions is by companies that sell the service within software bundles. These software bundles can be served and sold as bundle packages. These can be provided on a floppy disk or CD. Also, another way this can be provided is online providers. This information can be downloaded directly from an online source to the consumers’ computer. Most services are being provided at a cost to be downloaded online because it’s just as efficient but much quicker to get rather than having it mailed or having to go out and buy it.
One of the popular user applications provided by Linux is Anti-Virus applications. In today’s society of viruses and hackers, Anti-Virus applications appear to be the most popular to keeping not only a person’s computer but their information safe. At the small cost of this, it turns out to be a benefit for the consumer and user. Also, Anti-Virus applications is a large profit business because of all the viruses that are out there, the application always needs to be updated then will need to be bought again.
Another popular application that goes hand in hand with Anti-Virus is the Anti-Spam application. To use any anti-virus tools, you must be able to manage the spam that gets sent into your computer. Having anti-spam takes a proactive route to keeping your computer operating efficiently with no interruptions. This will also avoid the fact of people getting your information from your computer that can be considered as private and/or important information. Anti-Spam will filter any non-recognizing email address’ and send them into a junk folder which can then be sent to your virtual trash can.
I feel an advantage to using Linux is the ability to have more options within your servers and applications. I feel having a company that has virtually broken down into many parts, it makes it easier to understand what it is that the consumer needs. A disadvantage is with so many companies taking part in Linux, it leaves a potential hacker or a person that just make money to have more freedom to get information that the consumer doesn’t want to give out.
An easier way to look at this is a company practically broken up into many segments will bring many more companies that may be fraudulent. It may cause the lack of control to take place. Having Microsoft as one large company providing these services may be good as well because there is more of a controlled environment, yet the options may not be as advanced compared to a company that has it’s segments.
