Beginning of Semester Guidelines

BEGINNING OF SEMESTER GUIDELINES

Course Materials

Before the semester begins all needed course materials will be available.

You will receive:
          Textbooks
          Textbook ancillary materials

All other materials are available on the BHCC Developmental Math website:

Course objectives, course policy information and data collection instruments can all be downloaded and/or printed.

 Course Placement and Pretests

All sequential math courses require that the prerequisite course be completed with at least a C grade. The prerequisite requirement may be satisfied by credits already earned or by placement scores on the CPT.

Paper and pencil pretests are available for MAT091, MAT092, MAT094, MAT192/194, and MAT197. The pretests can serve four purposes:
          -confirm CPT placement results
-provide written verification of the need to change course placement
-give students an overview of personal strengths and deficiencies
-give instructors an overview of class strengths and deficiencies

Pretests should be administered at the first class meeting.
Items on Part I of the Pretest assess students' performance on prerequisite skills.
If a student performs poorly on Part I, it is important to let the student know that he/she needs to review the material.  Also, it is important that the instructor verify that the student has met the pre-requisite requirement (grade of C or better in pre-requisite course or satisfactory score on placement test).  This can be verified by the Developmental Math Coordinator.
Items on Part II of the Pretest assess student's performance on skills included in the semester course objectives. Students who perform well on Part II may be ready for the next sequential course.

Students who need course changes should be referred to the developmental math coordinator or department chair.

All data collection instruments are available at the BHCC Developmental Math website and in the Developmental Math folder on the I Drive.

Course Objectives

The required content for each course is determined by the published catalog description and the listed objectives.
All objectives must be covered.
All units must be completed.

Course objectives for MAT091, MAT092 and MAT094 include both content objectives and study skills and math learning objective. Course objectives are available at the Developmental Math website and in the Developmental Math folder on the I Drive.

Teaching Procedures

A variety of instructional modes may be used in working toward achieving the course objectives. Class meetings may consist of whole class discussions as well as individual and small group work. Classroom activities and home assignments may use computer software, calculators and manipulative materials.

Class Meetings

All courses are required to meet each week on the days published in the master schedule. Classes should begin and end at the stated times. Instructors should be present for the entire class. Students are expected to attend all classes and are expected to arrive on time.

The DCE contract states:
“Any class not held due to the absence of the unit member or dismissed early is generally unacceptable.”
Instructors should arrange substitute coverage, make-up classes or extended hours to compensate for any missed time.

Portfolios

The portfolio process is being implemented to introduce students to study skills and successful student practices helpful to the math learning process.

Logistics

? A classroom file cabinet will be available for student folders.
? Folders may be requisitioned from Central Services or requested from the
   Developmental Math Coordinator.
? Instructors should label folders with identifying information:
course number, section number, student number (1-22) or name…
? Each student folder will include the completed worksheets collected over the
   semester.
**Instructors who do not have a key for the file cabinets should request one from the Developmental Math Coordinator.

Portfolio Content

Instructors should select activities which best serve the needs of students.
The portfolio should contain 10 to 15 worksheets by the end of the semester, to include:
? Worksheet activities corresponding to objectives from 6 study skills areas
? Worksheet activities corresponding to objectives from 3 math learning areas
? Written reflections

Instructors should use the Portfolio Planning Tool to select and record activities for the semester.
The Portfolio Planning Tool, Portfolio worksheets and further information on the Portfolio process are all available on the Developmental Math website.

Portfolio Assessment: Evaluating Student Work

? Worksheets will be graded by the instructor.
? Portfolio will be weighted 5-15% of semester grade.

Course Policies/Syllabi

Course policies should be distributed to students during the first class meeting.
Course policies serve as the legal contract between instructor and student; they describe all course content, procedures and policies.  While instructors may create their own syllabi, they are encouraged to review the sample syllabi on this website

Course Policy Guidelines - MCCC Contract

The MCCC Contract states that course policies should contain the following information.

? Course Title/Number
? General course description and prerequisites (according to College catalogue)

address and any scheduled office hours

? Teaching procedures (briefly describe)
? Course topics and/or assignments and/or required and/or supplemental reading
? Tentative test schedule/assignment(s) schedule
? Basis for student grading and criteria for evaluating student performance

Course policies for MAT091/092/094 should include:

? Math content objectives
? Study skills and math learning objectives
? Portfolio content
? Tentative schedule
? Eligibility requirements for an IP grade
? Final Exam and Exit test requirement
Prerequisite requirement for sequential math courses
? Grading policy to include math content grade, portfolio grade,

A student with a documented disability, who has not already done so, should schedule an appointment at the Office for Students with Disabilities (Room D106A) in order to obtain appropriate services.

? Statement regarding changes to syllabus (changes in topics, testing …)
    Example:
Syllabus (subject to change): Any changes will be effective after notification in class and posting on the class website.

? Statement regarding calculator use (when permitted, not allowed, required…)
*Note:  Calculators should not be permitted in MAT091, but may be permitted for selected topics in courses thereafter, at the instructor's discretion.

Classroom Environment

All members of the college community are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. All classroom interactions should take place in an environment which is considerate and supportive. The classroom situation should always be respectful.

The College Catalog describes the Code of Behavior expected of students. Disruptive or inappropriate behaviors in the classroom are specifically prohibited. Complaints against students should be referred to the appropriate academic dean, for inappropriate behavior in the classroom, or to the Dean of Student Affairs, for inappropriate behavior on college property.

The Student Handbook also describes the Student Code of Conduct including Student Rights and Responsibilities and unacceptable behaviors.

Complaints by students against other members of the college community may be resolved through the Student Grievance Procedure as described in the Student Handbook.

If an instructor requires assistance with an emergency situation or inappropriate classroom behavior, help is available.
