Beginning Letter Sounds Phonemic awareness is necessary to grasp the alphabetic principle that underlies our written language and contributes to the development of early literacy skills. Identification Student will identify and select clip art pictures containing a specific letter/sound.	Unskilled Student selects 0-1 clip art pictures that begin with a specific letter.	Basic Student selects 1-2 clip art pictures that begin with a specific letter.	Intermediate Student selects 3-4 clip art pictures that begin with a specific letter.	Proficient Student selects 5+ clip art pictures that begin with a specific letter.
Labeling Student will communicate an objects' beginning sound.	Unskilled Student produces the intial sound for 0-1 clip art pictures.	Basic Student produces the initial sound for 1-2 clip art pictures.	Intermediate Student iproduces the initial sound for 3-4 clip art pictures.	Proficient Student produces the initial sound for 5+ clip art pictures.
Transfer of Skills Student applies knowledge of beginning letter sounds to other areas of curriculum.	Unskilled Student is unable to apply knowledge of beginning letter sounds to other areas of curriculum with relative ease.	Basic Student is able to apply knowledge of beginning letter sounds to other areas of curriculum given a verbal prompt and 3 errors.	Intermediate Student is able to apply knowledge of beginning letter sounds to other areas of curriculum with minimal verbal prompting and 1-2 errors.	Proficient Student is able to apply knowledge of beginning letter sounds to other areas of curriculum. Student does not require verbal prompting and makes 0-1 errors.
