Manipulative usage	Poor Does not use manipulatives to represent numbers in a one-to-one comparison, plays with manipulatives, or does not participate in the activity.	Fair Uses manipulatives to represent numbers, but does not know what number the the manipulatives are supposed to represent.	Good Uses manipulatives to represent numbers, and understands what number the manipulatives represent in each group.
Ability to write numbers	Poor Does not successfully write the numeral. Does not form any of the numbers.	Fair Successfully creates but can not explain why it was correct. Needs help writing the number, but knows what number should be there.	Good Successfully creates the numbers, and can explain what numbers the manipulatives represent.
Ability to add numbers	Poor Is not able to count the number of sponges or set them up in a mathematical sentence.
