Non-Fiction Writing In this unit of Writer's Workshop, students will study the procedures of writing books that will teach the reader about a topic. Rubric Code: WXC686 By aynsleysmall Ready to use Public Rubric Subject: English Type: Writing Grade Levels: K-5

Non-Fiction Writing
	Poor 1 pts	Good 2 pts	Outstanding 3 pts
Attitude Does the child view him/herself as a non-fiction author?	Poor Student does not try to convey any information in his/her story.	Good Student conveys one or two facts, but does not stay on point.	Outstanding Student conveys two or more facts, stays on topic, and is excited to share information with peers.
Qualities of Good Writing Does the student use the craft techniques from mini-lessons?	Poor Student does not use any precise words that teach the reader about the topic.	Good Student demonstrates a use of precise words that teach the reader about the topic.	Outstanding Student demonstrates a use of precise words that teach the reader about the topic. Child's paper also shows evidence of basic writing conventions. (i.e. capital letters at the beginning of a sentence and punctuation at the end of the sentence.)
Revision Is the child going back to read his/her work?	Poor Child does not reread his/her own work.	Good Child rereads his/her own work.	Outstanding Child rereads his/her own work making corrections when recognized.
Productivity How long does the child write for independently?	Poor The child does not work independently during writing time.	Good The child can work on writing for 10-20 minutes.	Outstanding The child can work on writing for longer stretches of time- 20-30 minutes.
Genre Is the child writing in a non-fiction format?	Poor Student does not write non-fiction stories.	Good Student can be refocused back into working on non-fiction writing.	Outstanding Student is only working on the non-fiction genre.
