What is mindfulness?

Student will be able to describe what mindfulness is and how it can help them in specific settings.

Level 1 Beginner

Student has no knowledge of mindfulness.
Level 2 Emerging

Student has a minimal knowledge of mindfulness and is able to identify at least two fact/component about mindfulness
Level 3 Proficient

Student shows a moderate knowledge of mindfulness and is able to identify at least three facts/components/strategieas about mindfulness.
Level 4 Exceeds proficiency

Student shows a strong knowledge of mindfulness and is able to identify at least four facts/components about mindfulness
Breathing

Student will learn to utilize belly breathing as a strategy to self calm and be present.

Level 1 Beginner

Shallow breathing. Not able to inhale or exhale for longer than 4-5 seconds during each breathing exercise.
Level 2 Emerging

With prompting, student is able to do some deep breathing practices. In hales from 5-10 seconds, with verbal coaching, during breathing exercises.
Level 3 Proficient

Student is able to independently do some deep breathing practices. Inhales and exhales from 5-10 seconds during breathing exercises.
Level 4 Exceeds proficiency

Student is skilled at deep breathing. Allows breath to run the mind. Is able to inhale and exhale from 10-etc seconds during breathing exercises.
Concentration/participation

Student understands the premise of mindfulness and is willing to engage in exercises.

Level 1 Beginner

Has difficulty concentrating when learning or practicing strategies or refuses to participate or attempt.
Level 2 Emerging

Usually will attempt to concentrate when learning or practicing new strategies or skills. Particiaptes actively with frequent reminders to follow instructions or remain on task.
Level 3 Proficient

Perseveres and concentrates when learning or practicing new skills. Participates activley with infrequent reminders to follow instructions or remain on task.
Level 4 Exceeds proficiency

Perseveres and concentrates when learning or practicing a new skills. ALways particpates activley and willingly. Independently applies and transfers learning. Models for peers.
STOPP

STOPP is a practice/techniquesthat assists students in being reflective and brings them back to the moment.

Level 1 Beginner

Is able to identify at least two or fewer steps in the STOPP process.
Level 2 Emerging

Student is able to identify at least three steps in the STOPP process and is able to give at least one supporting detail on steps with prompting.
Level 3 Proficient

Student is able to identify the five steps in the STOPP process and give at least two supporting detaills on steps. They are able to complete with minimal prompting.
Level 4 Exceeds proficiency

Student is able to identify the five steps in the STOPP process and give at least three supporting details on the steps. Students are able to do this independently and model this for other students.

Student demonstrates an understanding of when to use mindfulness in school and in life.

Level 1 Beginner

Student can not identify ways to use mindfulness in school or in his life.
Level 2 Emerging

Student can identify 1-2 ways to use mindfulness in school and in their life.
Level 3 Proficient

Student can identify 3-4 ways to utilize mndfulness in school and in their life.
Level 4 Exceeds proficiency

Student can identify 5-6 ways to use mindfulness in school and in their life.
