Story events	Novice The student did not describe enough of the important events from the story to retell or summarize the story.	Basic The student told some of the story but did not include the most important events.	Proficient The student summarized the story using the most important events.
Sequence	Novice The student did not put the events into a logical order. The story did not make sense.	Basic Some of the events are in the correct order. It was a little difficult to understand the story.	Proficient The story was retold in a very sequential order. It was easy to understand the story.
Length	Novice The student wrote too long and merely paraphrased the information as opposed to summarizing it.	Basic The student shortened the article, but by not as much as 60 per cent and maintained most of the key points.	Proficient The student reduced the length of the article in a summary that was 60 to 80 per cent shorter than the original and retained the key points.
Mechanics	Novice The student exhibited numerous spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and/or grammar errors.	Basic The student has some of the summary corrected for spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and/or grammar errors.	Proficient The student's summary has been corrected or has only a few errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and/or grammar errors.
Paraphrasing/Quoting	Novice The student plagiarized several times (three or more) by failing to put strings of words/sentences in his/her own language.	Basic The student summarized most of the article in his/her own words, but in at least one case plagiarized by failing to use his/her own words.	Proficient The student summarized the article in his/her own words and used quotes appropriately and according to APA style.
