	Annotation Symbols 20 pts	Reading with your Pen 40 pts	Close Reading Question 40 pts
Excellent	Annotation Symbols 18-20 pts All 5 symbols were used thoughtfully and without error. It is evident that the reader took advantage of the symbols to help them approach the text.	Reading with your Pen 37-40 pts Each required section was complete and shows effort and understanding of the annotation guide.	Close Reading Question 34-40 pts Each question is answered correctly and a connection to the author and text.
Good	Annotation Symbols 15-17 pts At least 3 of the five symbols were used. It is evident that the reader took advantage of most of the symbols to help them approach the text.	Reading with your Pen 34-37 pts Two out of the three required activities were completed and shows some understanding of the benefits of annotation.	Close Reading Question 30-33 pts Three of the four questions have been answered correctly and the reader attempted to make a connection between the text and the author.
Poor	Annotation Symbols 14 and below The reader did not use the five symbols and it is not evident that they used the symbols to help them approach the text.	Reading with your Pen 33 and below Only one of the three activities were completed or there is no evidence of understanding the benefits of annotation.	Close Reading Question 29 and below Half of the questions were answered correctly, but there was no effort evident in making a connection between the author and text.
