Evidence/Examples	Poor Includes 1 or fewer pieces of evidence. Evidence and examples are not relevant AND/OR are not explained.	Fair Includes 2 pieces of evidence that support the topic sentenc.e At least one of the major details has a minor detail that makes the major detail more clear.	Good Includes 3 or more pieces of evidence that support the topic sentence. Most of the evidence and examples are specific and relevant to the topic sentence.	Excellent Includes 3 or more pieces of evidence that support the topic sentence. All of the evidence and examples are specific, relevant and explanations are given that show how each piece of evidence supports the author's position.
Summary Statement	Poor There is no closing sentence; the paragraph just ends.	Fair The author's position is restated but lacks originality.	Good The closing sentence is recognizable. Transitions	Poor The transitions between ideas are unclear or nonexistent.	Fair Some transitions work well, but connections between ideas are fuzzy. Point of view	Poor Author makes more than 4 errors with point of view.	Fair Author makes 3-4 errors with point of view	Good Author makes 1-2 errors with point of view.	Excellent Author makes no errors with point of view. The author remains objective.
