Mechanics look like the overhead clear, contact is made above the head or close to it, gentle "push" of the shuttle lands it close to the net and in front of the short service line, gentle follow through

Smash is taken from every area on the court, mechanics are not like the clear, contact in made near the head, racket face is somewhat pointing downward. Follow through stops at contact, shuttle may not land inbounds or make it over the net.
BEGINNING

Recognized the opportunity to smash too late to get ready.
Drive

EXEMPLARY

Drive is contacted around head height, in front of body. The power of the shot makes it difficult to return. The drive is directed towards opponents chest.
PROFICIENT

Drive is contacted around head height, in front of body. The power of the shot allows for a return. The drive is directed towards opponent.
DEVELOPING

Drive is contacted lower than head level. and may not make it over the net.
BEGINNING

Little recognition of opportunity to perform a drive shot.
