Mosaic On-going Assignment 
Students will create a design (realistic, abstract, or non-objective) and create a mosaic using the direct method of mosaic application. They may choose to use the masonite panel provided or bring in another object of comparible size to mosaic.

The student did the assignment in a satisfactory manner but lack of planning was evident. The student is vague in their description of how to apply the elements/principles to their artwork.
Level 4

The work shows that the student applied the elements/principles that were discussed in class adequately.
The student is basic in their description of how they used the art elements/principles in their work.
Level 5

The work shows that the student applied the elements/principles that were discussed in class in a complex manner.
The student thoroughly and with great detail explains how they used the art elements/principles in their work.
Creativity/Originality

Level 1

The piece shows little or no evidence of original thought. There are no preliminary thumbnails or sketches.
Level 2

The piece shows little evidence of original thought. There are minimal attempts at preliminary thumbnails or sketches.
Level 3

The student's work lacked sincere originality. <BR>
There are attempts at thumbnails or sketches but they do not show adequate problem-solving efforts.
Level 4

The student's work demonstrates originality. The student has created several sketches or thumbnails in an effort to work though problem-solving.
Level 5

The student's work demonstrates originality and shows evidence of planning and problem-solving through complex sketches or thumbnails that show the process of thought.
Effort

Level 1

The student did not finish work.
Level 2

The student did not finish work in satisfactory manner. Few or not tiles are cut and organization of tiles is poor.
Level 3

The student finished the project but it lacked finished touches. The project could be improved upon with little effort. Few tiles are cut and organization of tiles is minimal. Student did not consider contrast when choosing grout color.
Level 4

The student completed the project in an above average manner, yet more could have been done. 1/3 of tiles are cut and are organized well. Student considered contrast when choosing grout color.
Level 5

The student gave an effort far beyond the requirements of the project. 1/3 to more than 1/3 of tiles are cut and organized in a complex manner. Student made careful selection of grout color to maximize design.
Skill

Level 1

The student disregarded craftsmanship and did not put forth effort for understanding. <BR>
They did not ask for help or responded negatively to help to improve their craftsmanship or understanding. Student didn't finish mosaic placement or did not grout.
Level 2

The student showed poor craftsmanship or lacked understanding. They did not ask for help or responded negatively at times to help to improve their craftsmanship or understanding.<BR>
Student had sloppy mosaic placement with poor spacing. Grouting is sloppy and tiles are not polished off.
Level 3

The student showed average craftsmanship and understanding. <BR>
They asked minimal questions and made minimal effort to respond to help from the teacher to improve their craftsmanship and understanding. Student had some sloppy mosaic placement and some poor spacing. Grouting is somewhat sloppy and some tiles are left unpolished.
Level 4

The student showed average craftsmanship and understanding. The student worked hard to ask questions and respond to help from the teacher to improve their craftsmanship and understanding. Student worked hard to space tiles appropriately. Student grouted appropriately as demonstrated in class.
Level 5

The work shows outstanding craftsmanship and was finished with a great deal of care throughout the artistic process. They asked questions and responded to help from the teacher appropriately. Mosaic placement is very well done and grouting is well done.
