Meaning and Development	Poor Little evidence of a topic or main idea.	Fair Some evidence of a topic or main idea. Retells an event.	Good Topic or main idea is clearly evident and supported. Retell events and adds personal reactions.
Organization	Poor There is little evidence of sequence and/or focus.	Fair Has beginning, middle, and end. Maintains focus most of the time.	Good Clear beginning, middle, and end. Maintains focus throughout.
Language	Poor Uses few words that can be understood by others.	Fair Uses many words that can be understood by others. Attempts to use transitions and high frequency words.	Good consistently uses words that can be understood by others. Uses transition words and grade level high frequency words.
Mechanics	Poor There is little evidence of capitalizaiton or puncuation. Little evidence of grade level spelling.	Fair Attempts to use capitalization and punctuation to begin and end sentences. Uses some inventive spelling and/or high frequency words.	Good Uses conventional capitalization and puncuation to begin and end sentences. Uses grade level inventive spelling and high frequency words.
