Writing Quality	Excellent There are essentially no errors or misspellings throughout the entire book. Expert use of varied sentences and dialogue.	Good There are one or two obvious, glaring errors. A few instances of varied sentences and dialogue.	Fair There are a few proofreading errors. The story uses little varied sentences.	Poor There are many spelling, usage, or grammar errors. Language is simplistic.
Illustrations	Excellent Illustrations are vibrant, detailed, and enhance the meaning of the story.	Good Illustrations are aesthetically pleasing, clear, and relate well to the story.	Fair Illustrations show modest effort and relate somewhat to the story.	Poor Illustrations are sloppy, vague, do not relate well to the story.
Plot & Theme	Excellent Story has a plot and moral that all people, kids and adults, can relate to and learn from. Story is original, imaginative, and entertaining.	Good Contains an easily recognizable plot and moral that most readers can relate to and enjoy. Story is entertaining and interesting.	Fair Story has a plot, but no recognizable theme or moral.<BR> Story is somewhat difficult to follow.	Poor Missing several or most of the elements of a proper story. No moral present in the story. Story is convoluted and difficult to follow.
Cover/Presentation	Excellent Title and illustrations entice the audience to read the book. The overall look of the book reflects a tremendous amount of effort.	Good Title and illustrations are appealing and clearly relate to the story. The overall look of the book reflects a significant amount of effort.	Fair Title and illustrations relate to the story. The overall look reflects a modest amount of effort.	Poor Title and illustration are poorly done and/or do not relate to the story. The overall look shows work obviously done in haste.
Characters	Excellent Contains few central characters whom all readers can relate to and learn from. Characters have interesting names.	Good Most readers can relate to the characters. The names are appropriate, but not memorable.	Fair Story has a few central characters who share some experiences with the audience.	Poor Story has too many characters or no recognizable central character that the audience can relate to.
