Second Year Band Scale (key signature) Performance 
This rubric will guide students through their preparation and evaluation of scale performance assessments. Students using this rubric will have had one previous year of wind instruction.

The student has a good attitude and practices sporadically.

The student comes to class totally prepared with all necessities and a 'ready-to-learn' attitude.

The student does not practice at all.
Basic

The student only practices when assigned a specific assignment/exercise or practice log.

The student practices sporadically throughout the week.

Novice

The instrument needs so much repair it is unplayable.
The student's reed is unplayable.
The student does have valve/slide oil.

The instrument is in very poor condition and needs repairs.
The student uses reeds far too long - past their playing life.
The student does not use valve/slide oil.
Proficient

The instrument is in need of minor repairs but still plays.
The student usually uses decent reeds, but is not prepared for an emergency (should have 3 good reeds at all times).
The student has the proper supplies but needs to be told when to use them.
Advanced

The instrument is in excellent condition.
The student maintains a steady supply of good reeds.
The student has a good supply of oils/grease and knows when and how to use it/them.
Embouchure 0-3 pts

Novice

The student is not using the correct embouchure.
Basic

The student has mouth in correct position, but muscles are underdeveloped.
Proficient

Embouchure is correctly formed and strengthening.
Advanced

Embouchure is correctly formed, is strong and demonstrates excellent endurance.
Articulation 0-3 pts

Novice

There is no separation between notes; the tongue is not being used at all. Student is unable to correct these with teacher direction.
Basic

There is some separation between notes but no consistency is established; student is able to fix most errors with teacher direction.
Proficient

Most of the notes are clearly articulated with a "dah" sound (rather than a "TUT" sound or simply oozing into the note by blowing only). Student is able to fix articulation matters with teacher intervention.
Advanced

All articulation is accurately interpreted and executed.
Posture/Playing Position 0-3 pts

Novice

There is no demonstration of any knowledge of proper posture and correct playing position.
Basic

Proper posture and playing positions are attempted but not consistent. The student does adjust and fix with teacher assistance.
Proficient

Proper posture and playing positions are demonstrated but still need strength building endurance.
Advanced

Excellent posture supports all concepts of a successful performer (an unobstructed air stream; correct positioning of all parts of the instrument; ease of fluid technique).
Rhythm 0-3 pts

Novice

A clear lack of a steady tempo is demonstrated. As a result, the student is unable to interpret/ execute rhythms accurately.
Basic

Student is able to perform with a steady beat a portion of the time with teacher direction. Rhythms are attempted but are still inaccurate.
Proficient

A solid tempo is beginning to emerge and most rhythms are better executed. Student is able to fix some rhythms without teacher intervention/direction.
Advanced

All rhythms are steady and correctly executed; a consistent tempo is maintained.
Air Support/Sound/Tone 0-3 pts

Novice

Minimal air is provided resulting in a 'fuzzy' or unsupported sound. It is difficult to identify what instrument is being played by the sound.
Basic

A weak air stream is supplied, tone is 'fuzzy' due to underdevelopment of air stream and embouchure. Sound may be recognizable as a musical instrument.
Proficient

A developing focused tone is supported by a solid consistent air stream. Instrument voice can be easily deciphered.
Advanced

A focused tone specific to the the instrument is demonstrated through a trained and developed air stream supported from the diaphragm.
Technique 0-3 pts

Novice

Improper hand positioning and poor posture contribute to inaccuracy of note execution (as well as lack of knowledge).
Basic

Some techniques are correct, and the student is able to correct one or more with teacher direction. Posture and playing position are positively recognized.
Proficient

Most techniques are executed correctly, and student is able to fix errors without teacher intervention. Basic fingering application is incorporated along with good posture and playing position.
Advanced

Excellent posture and instrument positioning contribute to successful note execution. The student's execution of a musical line is flawlessly demonstrated by use of advanced alternative chromatic fingerings.
Scales/Technique 0-3 pts

Novice

The student does not know any scales at all.
Basic

The student has a basic knowledge of scales, but has no command over the keys.
Proficient

The student is aware of the importance of major and chromatic scales and an effort has been made in developing technique.
Advanced

All scales major and chromatic scales have been learned. The student is also aware of minor scales.
NUMBER OF NOTES (23) KS 0-25 pts

Novice

The student missed nearly all key signature notes and the student is oblivious.

Basic

The student made key signature mistakes. The student knew mistakes were made but is unsure of how to fix the mistakes.

Proficient

The student made few mistakes, knew where they happened and knows how to fix them.

Advanced

All notes were played correctly/accurately.

The student is tapping their foot, minimal mistakes are made, and when they are made, the student knows exactly how to fix them.

Advanced

The student tapped the correct note value and played the correct rhythms.
