Research Question

Develop a viable research topic based on the course or assigned topic.

Poor

Question is not related to the distributed topic. Student repeats distributed topic with no modification. Student chooses a report topic ("Body image and TV) rather than a research question (How is body image among teenage girls affected by television viewing?).
Fair

Research question is related to the topic, but is too broad or too narrow. Topic can not be realistically researched with available resources and/or time. Question may be basic enough to be easily answered with general background resources instead of requiring deeper investigation.
Good

Research question is fairly focused, and is a good fit for available resources. Research question shows some understanding of issues and concepts related to the subject. Displays some aspects of original thought or investigation.
Excellent

Research question is well developed with a scope appropriate to available resources and the terms of the assignment. Question is grounded in background information, but displays a high level of independent thought and inquiry.
Gather Preliminary Information

Use background information sources effectively to gain familiarity with and an understanding of the topic.

Poor

Student is unable to identify relevant background or contextual information.
Fair

Student identifies sources of background information, but shows difficulty extracting concepts and related themes on which to build a research question.
Good

Student identifies sources of background information and successfully extracts some concepts and keywords on which to build a research question.
Excellent

Student identifies sources of background information and extracts numerous concepts and keywords from which to develop a research question.
Viability

Determine and respond to the viability of the initial research topic based on available resources.

Poor

Student fails to test validity of initial research topic, or fails to alter topic after determining that appropriate sources are not available.
Fair

Student recognizes weaknesses in initial research results, but has difficulty articulating reasons for poor results. He/she makes minimal changes to initial research question by altering some search terms or approaches.
Good

Student can articulate the weaknesses of initial research results. Student alters search terms and scope of research question to improve results.
Excellent

Student can articulate the weaknesses of initial research results. Student successfully engages in an iterative process to arrive at a research question and search terms that result in successful, targeted results.
Clarity

State the research question clearly and succinctly.

Poor

The research question is absent or unidentifiable.
Fair

The research question is present, but is confusing or hard to identify.
Good

The research question is present and is stated with adequate clarity.
Excellent

The research question is stated at the beginning of the paper and is clear and focused. The research question is the obvious focus of the paper.
Resource Selection

Supports discussion of the research question with resources appropriate to scope and timeliness.

Poor

Cited literature lacks relevance to the research question.
Fair

Sources are relevant, but may be too vague or too narrow to truly address the research question. Sources do not match the timeliness of the question (ie up to date for current event topics)
Good

At least half of all sources show a high level of relevance in addressing the research topic. Scope and timeliness are generally appropriate.
Excellent

Most or all cited literature is appropriate to the timeliness and scope of the research question. Literature shows attention to balance and relevance.
