Student does not seem to have a clear understanding of the story he/she is rewriting.
2- Satisfactory

Student presents a basic understanding of the original story he/she is rewriting, but may have neglected higher level, abstract plot details (or implications).
3- Excellent

Student has a thorough understanding of the story he/she is rewriting, from the most basic details about the plot to the themes and understandings of the piece.
Script Elements

1- Unsatisfactory

Student does not rewrite the story from another character's perspective satisfactorily. Student may write from another perspective but not alter anything, or not contrast the characters' perspective enough to the original.
2- Satisfactory

Student rewrites story from another character's perspective but it may seem flat and lack authenticity.
3- Excellent

Student rewrites story from another character's perspective and creates voice and motivations for this character as part of the rewrite.
Changes event/plot

1- Unsatisfactory

Student does not change an event in the plot of the story, or does not change an event enough.
2- Satisfactory

Student changes only one or two plot details and attributes of the story to fit that perspective, but may have not altered the story significantly. It also may be incorporated into the story awkwardly.
3- Excellent

Student makes at least one significant change to the storyline, and it is a direct effect of the new perspective he/she is writing the story from. It is incorporated into the story smoothly.
Includes elements from original

1- Unsatisfactory

Student does not include elements from the original story, or does not include enough elements to make the story recognizable.
2- Satisfactory

Student includes basic elements from the original story but may not develop them enough or develop the story enough. It may read like a copy of the original with changes not integrated well.
3- Excellent

Student includes basic elements from the original story, develops the story thoroughly, and integrates the changes effectively into the plot.
Spelling/Capitalization/Punctuation

1- Unsatisfactory

Student rarely or never uses correct spelling, capitalization and punctuation.
2- Satisfactory

Student uses correct spelling, capitalization and punctuation about half of the time.
3- Excellent

Student uses correct spelling, capitalization and punctuation most of the time, making few or no errors.
Writes with clarity and precision.

1- Unsatisfactory

The student's story is confusing to read, and may include many plot holes, missing pieces, and unclear language and structure, etc.
2- Satisfactory

The student's story makes sense for the most part, but may have one or two areas of confusion, plot holes, repetitive sentence structure, etc.
3- Excellent

The student's story makes sense to the reader and is clear and well-written.
