Characterization	Excellent The characters is clearly portrayed using direct and indirect characterization.	Good The character is basically developed in some way. The character is somewhat realistic, but inconsistent. Traits are somewhat developed.	Fair The character is flat without much developement.	Poor There is no character development.
Plot	Excellent The story is extremely developed and thorough and flows smoothly with a purposeful narration.	Good The story is very developed and thorough without being verbose. The characters are somewhat developed.	Fair The story is somewhat developed or rambling and verbose. There is some development of the characters.	Poor The story is undeveloped or extremely verbose.
Setting/Description & Imagery	Excellent Use of setting is clear. Specific sensory details are used.	Good Use of setting is somewhat clear; some sensory details used.	Fair Use of setting is unclear, it is difficult for the reader to identify setting in the story; not many sensory details used.	Poor No use of setting is present in the short story. It is clearly undetermined; no sensory details are used.
Mechanics/ Length	Excellent Short story is typed and is 5-6 or more pages, double-spaced in 12-point, Times New Roman font. Unique title is present. Only one or two errors in grammar and mechanics.	Good Short story is typed and is 2 or more pages, double-spaced in 12-point, Times New Roman font. Title is present, but may not be unique. Some errors in grammar and mechanics. Point of View	Excellent Point of view is clear, use of first person, third person limited and omniscient easily detected by the reader. Changes point of view for reader interest (if possible).	Good Point of view somewhat clear, shift between first and third not always easy to identify for reader. Little use of change, but is identifiable.	Fair Point of view is unclear at times, shifts in dialogue (first or third) hard for reader to detect. Reader struggles to identify point of view.	Poor Point of view is not clear. Reader is unable to identify point of view at all in piece.
