Ball Balance
Poor
The student struggles to keep the ball balanced on the racquet strings. The student is unable to walk 20 feet while balancing the ball, cannot touch the ground with their hand, and/or cannot return without dropping the ball 3 or more times.
Fair
The student is able to keep a ball mostly balanced on racquet strings, walk 20 feet, touch the ground with their hand, and return dropping the ball no more than 2 times.
Good
The student is able to keep a ball balanced on racquet strings, using one hand to hold the racquet, walk 20 feet, touch the ground with their opposite hand, and return without dropping the ball.
Tap Ups
Poor
The student struggles to hit the ball with the palm facing up. The student hits the ball 4 times or less and is unable to maintain control.
Fair
After two attempts, the student is able to use the racquet to tap the ball up at least 5 consecutive times while maintaining control.
Good
With the palm facing up and using one hand to hold the racquet, the student is able to use the racquet to tap the ball up to or close to eye height at least 7-10 consecutive times while maintaining control.
Tap Downs
Poor
The student struggles to hit the ball with the palm facing down. The student hits the ball 4 times or less and is unable to maintain control.

After two attempts, the student is able to use the racquet to tap the ball down at least 5 consecutive times while maintaining control.
Good
After two attempts, with the palm facing down and using one hand to hold the racquet, the student is able to use the racquet to tap the ball down at least 7-10 consecutive times while maintaining control.
Accuracy
Poor
The student hits the ball towards the ball 6 times or less. The student is not able to accurately hit the ball.
Fair
The student is able to somewhat accurately hit a target on the wall at least 7 out of 15 times.
Good
The student is able to accurately hit a target on the wall at least 10 out of 15 times.
Rally and Accuracy
Poor
The student is unable to return any balls to the teacher.
Fair
The student is able to return at least 2 out of 5 balls, thrown by the teacher, to a distance that the teacher is able to catch.
Good
The student is able to return at least 4 out of 5 balls, thrown by the teacher, to a distance that the teacher is able to catch.
Skill Development
Poor
The student uses 2 or less of the following skills correctly while performing the pre-assessment activities: correct grip, aligns the shoulder to the target, swings the racquet low to high, transfers weight, and follows through to target.
Fair
The student uses at least 3 of the following skills correctly while performing the pre-assessment activities: correct grip, aligns the shoulder to the target, swings the racquet low to high, transfers weight, and follows through to target.
