Level 3 Main topic is stated in an opening sentence but sentence structure is not correct. Opening sentence is interesting.	Level 2 Main topic is not clearly stated but sentence structure is correct. Opening sentence doesn't catch the reader's attention.	Level 1 Main topic is not clearly stated. Sentence structure is not correct.
Content	Level 4 Student has written 4 or more supporting sentences AND all sentences are on topic. Uses a variety of adjectives and/or adverbs.	Level 3 Student has written 3 supporting sentences AND all are on topic. Uses some adjectives and/or adverbs,	Level 2 Student has written 2 supporting sentences AND all are on topic. Doesn't use adjectives or adverbs.	Level 1 Student has only written 1 supporting sentence on topic. Doesn't use adjectives or adverbs.
Organization	Level 4 Paragraphs have an opening sentence, detail sentences in correct order, and a concluding sentence.	Level 3 Paragraph is missing either the opening sentence or concluding sentence. Details are in correct order.	Level 2 Paragraph is missing both opening sentence and concluding sentence. Details are in correct order.	Level 1 Paragraph is missing both opening and concluding sentences and the details are in incorrect order.
Spelling	Level 4 Writes using conventional spelling.	Level 3 Writes using transitional/phonetic spelling and includes beginning, middle and ending sounds. There are no random letters (that don't make sense in words).	Level 2 Write using transitional/phonetic spelling but leaves out some sounds. There may or may not be random letters (that do not make sense in words).	Level 1 Writes using prephonic spelling to represent words. Leaves out several sounds and includes random letters.
