Supine Position

(AKA: Dorsal Recumbent)
back-lying position
bed is flat, head and shoulders are supported with a pillow, arms and hands at side and supported with pillow and palms down. Pad bony prominences and secure limbs. bed locked, safety strap applied.

Unable to complete without more than 2 assists from instructor and does not know the purpose of the position. Has to be reminded more than once to protect bony prominences and/or use correct body mechanics, does not complete hand hygiene.
Fair

Requires 1 assist from instructor. Has to be reminded to pad bony prominences, or elevate bed to waist or use correct body mechanics. Needs prompt to state purpose of the position.
Good

Prone Position

lies on the abdomen with head turned to one side, bed is flat, small pillows are placed under the head, abdomen and lower legs, gel pads under knees, arms are flexed at the elbows with the hands near the head. no pillow needed under feet., bed locked and safety strap applied.

Lateral position

(Semi-prone) left side lying position. Dependent/lower leg flexed at knee, upper leg is positioned so it is not on the lower leg. pillow between knees, heel protectors and bony prominences padded. the lower arm is extended in front of patient with axillary roll in place, upper arm supported in neutral, head and neck aligned and neutral with support, bed is flat and locked, safety strap applied.
