12 Major Scale Assessment
12 Major Scale Assessment
Students perform each of the 12 major scales. Students are to SLUR ascending to the 9th scale step and articulate with tonguing descending. Each of the 12 scales will be assessed individually. Students must exceed in all FOUR areas to receive an 'EXCEED' on each assessment. (Students may exceed on one scale but not necessarily on another)

Most pitches are correct but student has problems with aspects of the scale being performed.

Many incorrect pitches, intonation problems and problems maintaining proper registers.
Tone Quality
Exceed
Tone is full and well projected. A truly characteristic sound for the instrument.
Meet
Considerable use of projection and fullness of tone but still somewhat short of a mature sound.
Nearly Meet
Limited projection - tone is poor or range is limited due to the need for a stronger embouchure and/or breath support.
Does Not Meet
Sound is totally lacking in quality due to a poorly formed or weak embouchure/grip and/or no breath support.
Rhythm and Tempo Accuracy
Exceed
Steady pulse with accurate rhythms at all times.
Meet
Steady pulse with few rhythmic errors.
Nearly Meet
Pulse is unstable with major rhythmic errors.
Does Not Meet
No evidence of steady pulse.
Overall Preparation
Exceed
Student performs the scale with control and fluidity. Excellent preparation is evident throughout.
Meet
Student performs most of the material accurately. Preparation is good.
Nearly Meet
Student has prepared less than half of the test.
Does Not Meet
Student is not prepared
