Literary Essay
Students will complete a 5 paragraph essay analyzing a character from a literary text. Writing will be graded on capitalization, punctuation, use of main idea and supporting details, spelling of high frequency words, plural and possessive noun use, subject/verb tense and agreement, and relevant information.

Demonstrates basic knowledge of topic- uses general supporting details related to the main idea. Also includes at least 2 quotations and 1 explanation that support the topic of the paper.

Demonstrates some knowledge of topic- general supporting details are random with gaps that confuse the reader. Includes only one quotation and one explanation that supports the topic of the paper.
Level 1
Demonstrates limited awareness of the topic- very few or no supporting details used. No quotations from the used to support the topic of the paper, or the quotations used do not support the main topic of the paper.
Organization
Level 4
Follows the five-paragraph structure for an essay with a clear introduction, three main points (one paragraph per point), and conclusion. Follows a logical order that is easy for the reader to follow.

Follows the five-paragraph structure for an essay, but does not follow a logical order.
Level 2
Shows an attempt at following a five-paragraph order but contains gaps or missing a portion that confuses the reader.
Level 1
Exhibits little or no evidence of organizational structure; no evidence of following the five-paragraph format.
