Intro	Excellent Directly addresses the prompt in the opening remarks (hook) - clear claim or central idea-clear thesis sentence that directly relates back to the claim or central idea	Good Addresses the prompt in the introduction -claim is slightly unfocused - thesis sentence clear and relates back to the claim	Average Does not directly address the prompt - claim is unfocused - thesis sentence is vague	Poor Weak or ineffective in addressing the prompt-claim is unfocused and thesis sentence is unfocused
Paragraph Development	Excellent Thorough paragraph development - well-developed for advanced high school/early college (7-8 sentences) - TS and SD present and clear-stays on topic	Good Appropriate paragraph development - support is sound and logical but may lack specificity - TS and SD present for the most part	Average Paragraph underdeveloped - TS and SD present but weak in development	Poor Underdeveloped or undeveloped paragraphs. TS and SD not present in one or all of the paragraphs - lacks logic and cohesion as a result
