Contains a strong thesis that clearly explains the student's opinion and what the paper will be about. Introduces what will be discussed throughout the paper.
Good

Thesis is present. May not be as strong as one in a 10 paper. OR Does not not clearly preview the paper.
Average

Thesis is present but is weak. OR preview is present but weak.
Poor

No thesis OR No Preview.
Body (at least 4 paragraphs)

Excellent

Main idea that follows what has been stated in the thesis. Uses numerous, specific examples in order to reinforce main idea.
Good

Main idea that follows what has been stated in the thesis. Uses some specific examples but not as many or as strong as needed.
Average

Main idea is not as strong as could be. Uses less specific examples.
Poor

Main idea is weak. Examples are few and general.
Conclusion

Excellent

Summarizes paper and restates the strong thesis that is present in the introduction and throughout the paper. Leaves the reader with a desire to learn more.
Good

Restates thesis, but paper is not summarized completely. Ends in a creative but not necessary efficient way.
Average

Thesis is not restated. Summary is present but weak.
Poor

Thesis is not restated. Summary is not present.
Bibliography

Excellent

A wide range of sources are used which are highly relevant to the topic.
All references are properly included using the MLA format.
Good

Number of sources is sufficient to support the opinion presented. Most sources are properly included and follow the MLA format.
Average

Insufficient number of sources are presented or are not relevant to the topic. Not all sources are properly included and show difficulty using the MLA format.
Poor

Sources are lacking and irrelevant to topic. Sources are not included following the MLA format.
Use of Language:

Spelling, grammar and punctuation are are used accordingly.
