Inference Connected to Main idea
Level 1
Inferences are simply predictions that are not connected to the text at all and there is little or no evidence of use of background knowledge. No knowledge of why
making inferences deepens comprehension.
Level 2
Inferences show some use of background knowledge.
The student responses are very general and show basic interpretations of a text.
Beginning knowledge of how/why making inferences helps readers gain a deeper
understanding.
Level 3
Inferences are a result of the student's background knowledge and/or the author's
clues. Responses are connected to the text and justifiable. The student understands
how to make inferences and how this comprehension strategy aids in deeper level of
understanding.
Level 4
Inferences show evidence of deep thinking based on background knowledge and the
author's clues. The student's predicti,ons, interpretations, and/or conclusions are
deeply rooted in the text, and extend well beyond a general level of inference. The
student can effectively convey the process in which proficient readers use to make
inferences and how this strategy deepens their comprehension.
